You could try hacking the registry, but unfortunately not all applications use it to track where their program files are stored.

NTFS can make use of symbolic links that are not normally exposed to the user by default. These links basically make the OS think that the files are located in one location when in face they could be on another drive or partition. I have listed a few programs below that should cover all Windows versions from Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2008.

Windows has a utility called LINKD but you will need to have or purchase the Windows Resource Kit to get it and it is limited in functionality. Junction by Sysinternals works better than LINKD and is free to download from the microsoft site.

Vista and Server 2008 have a command line utility called MKLINK. It can create symlinks to files and folders local machine and remote host. This is unlike Junction which is limited to local machine and folder only symlinks.

If you would like a GUI to view symlinks and create junction points "Junction Link Magic" is freeware.

Additional Info:

Wikipedia - NTFS Symbolic Link
Microsoft (MSDN) - Creating Symbolic Links or Hard Links and Junctions

CHM HTML help file issues...

We noticed that our help files was not working properly when accessed over the network. You can find it on SourceForge.net.

This is basiclly a Virtual KVM using a Client Server model over TCP. You can seemlessly move your mouse from one screen to the other and the keyboard control is passed over to the other PC as well. You also have access to a shared clipboard.

Here is the Introduction section from their website at SourceForge as of today.

Quote Begin: From synergy2.sourceforge.net

Introduction
synergy: [noun] a mutually advantageous conjunction of distinct elements

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).

Redirecting the mouse and keyboard is as simple as moving the mouse off the edge of your screen. Synergy also merges the clipboards of all the systems into one, allowing cut-and-paste between systems. Furthermore, it synchronizes screen savers so they all start and stop together and, if screen locking is enabled, only one screen requires a password to unlock them all. Learn more about how it works.

Synergy is open source and released under the GNU Public License (GPL).

System Requirements

Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me (the Windows 95 family)
Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP (the Windows NT family)
Mac OS X 10.2 or higher
Unix
X Windows version 11 revision 4 or up
XTEST extension
(use "xdpyinfo grep XTEST" to check for XTEST)
All systems must support TCP/IP networking.

"Unix" includes Linux, Solaris, Irix and other variants. Synergy has only been extensively tested on Linux and may not work completely or at all on other versions of Unix. Patches are welcome (including patches that package binaries) at the patches page.

The Mac OS X port is incomplete. It does not synchronize the screen saver, only text clipboard data works (i.e. HTML and bitmap data do not work), the cursor won't hide when not on the screen, and there may be problems with mouse wheel acceleration. Other problems should be filed as bugs.

Quote End:

I decided to start a blog...

I decided to start a blog to capture some of the things I learn on a daily basis.

I wanted a way to give back to the online community that has helped me so much over the years in my career.

As a Systems Administrator I do most of my research online and greatly appreciate those folks that have posted their valuable lessons and experiences online.
